As a mom who’s faced her fair share of squirmy diaper change battles (I swear, I’ve had the squirmiest two babies when it comes to this), so I’m here to share some tried-and-true tips for keeping your squirmy baby in check and getting through diaper changes.
Distraction is Key: When your baby starts squirming during a diaper change, distraction can be your best friend. Keep a stash of small toys, books, or singing stuffed animals nearby to capture your baby’s attention. And rotation is also key- I had to keep different toys in the stash.
Sing a Silly Song: Lots of embarrassing silly songs have been made up by me. But use any song you know… rhyming ones work the best.
Use “Diaper Time Toys”: Invest in special toys or gadgets that are designated for diaper changing time only. These toys can be reserved exclusively for diaper changes, making them extra exciting and novel for your baby and helping to keep them still and engaged.
Make it a Game: Turn diaper changes into a game by incorporating playful interactions and gentle tickles. Use funny voices or make silly faces to get your baby laughing.
Try a Changing Station on the Floor: If your baby is particularly squirmy during diaper changes, consider setting up a diaper changing station on the floor instead of using a changing table. It was getting dangerous to change on the changing table so I would lay huge blankets on the floor and do it there.
Stay Calm and Patient: Above all, try to stay calm and patient during diaper changes, even when your baby is squirming like a little fish out of water. Easier said than done, I know. But remember that it’s normal for babies to be squirmy during diaper changes.
