As a mom, I understand the importance of protecting our children’s delicate skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, however, convincing a toddler to cooperate during the sunscreen application process can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Here are some things that I did to help.

Start Early and Make it Routine: Introduce sunscreen application as part of your child’s daily routine from an early age. By incorporating it into their morning routine alongside brushing teeth and getting dressed, you establish it as a non-negotiable habit rather than a one-time chore.

Lead by Example: Children often mimic their parents’ behavior, so make sunscreen application a family affair. Apply sunscreen to your own skin first and let your toddler see you doing it. This not only sets a positive example but also helps normalize the process for your child.

Choose the Right Sunscreen: Select a sunscreen specifically formulated for children with broad-spectrum protection and a high SPF. Look for sunscreens that are water-resistant and free from harsh chemicals or fragrances that may irritate your toddler’s sensitive skin.

Make it Fun: Turn sunscreen application into a fun and playful activity to engage your toddler’s cooperation. Let them choose their own sunscreen from a selection of child-friendly options featuring their favorite characters or vibrant colors. Consider singing a sunscreen song or turning it into a game to distract them while you apply it.

Use Creative Application Techniques: Experiment with different application techniques to find what works best for your child. Try drawing shapes or writing their name on their skin with the sunscreen before rubbing it in, or use a spray sunscreen for quick and easy application on the go.

Offer Choices and Control: Empower your toddler by offering them choices and control over the sunscreen application process. Let them decide whether they want to apply the sunscreen themselves or have you do it for them. Offer control over the order- I ask my toddler “do you want to sunscreen your legs first or your arms first?”

Provide Positive Reinforcement: Praise and reward your toddler for cooperating during sunscreen application. Offer verbal praise, high-fives, or small rewards such as stickers or a special treat afterward. I don’t know what it is but my toddler still loves when I cheer outloud for something she does!
