If you’re dealing with a colicky baby, you’re not alone. Try implementing the concept of the “5 S’s” – five simple techniques designed to calm and comfort even the fussiest of babies.

In this guide, we’ll explore each of the 5 S’s and how they can help soothe your crying baby, bringing peace and tranquility to both you and your little one. When your baby is crying, think to yourself “time to do the 5 S’s!”

  • Swaddling: This technique helps prevent your baby’s startle reflex from waking them up and provides a sense of comfort and security.
  • Side: Hold your baby on their side (never place them on their side when laying them in the bassinet or crib). Cuddle baby on his or her side like the photo below.
  • Shushing: Create a rhythmic “shushing” sound to mimic the sounds your baby heard in the womb. You can use white noise machines, a calming shushing sound from your mouth, or even recordings of gentle ocean waves or rainfall. The consistent noise helps drown out other sounds and provides a soothing environment for your baby.
  • Swinging: Gently rock or sway your baby in your arms or a baby swing to simulate the gentle movements they experienced in the womb. The rhythmic motion can help calm your baby’s nerves and lull them into a state of relaxation.
  • Sucking: Offer your baby a pacifier or encourage them to nurse if you’re breastfeeding. Sucking is a natural reflex for babies and can provide comfort and distraction from discomfort or overstimulation.

This information is based on the book The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp, a renowned pediatrician. I used this method with both of my newborns/babies and had tremendous success. It was a life saver! If you are interested in reading it, here is the book.
