As moms, our number one priority is keeping our little ones safe. But sometimes, the biggest dangers are the ones we can’t see. From everyday household items to seemingly harmless plants, there are hidden poisons all around us that can pose serious risks to our children. In this blog post, I’m sharing 10 common poisons to look out for in your home and how to keep your family safe.

  1. Household Cleaners: Many household cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can be toxic if ingested or even inhaled. Keep them out of reach of children, preferably locked away in a high cabinet or closet with a childproof latch.
  2. Medications: Over-the-counter and prescription medications should always be stored securely, preferably in a locked medicine cabinet. Remember to properly dispose of expired or unused medications to prevent accidental ingestion.
  3. Laundry Pods: Colorful and convenient, laundry pods can look like candy to young children. However, they contain concentrated detergent that can cause serious harm if ingested. Store them in a locked cabinet and never let children handle them unsupervised.
  4. Plants: Some common household plants, like philodendrons and lilies, are toxic if ingested. Research any plants you have in your home to ensure they’re safe for children and pets, and keep them out of reach.
  5. Pesticides and Insecticides: Chemicals used to control pests can be extremely toxic to humans and animals. Use non-toxic alternatives whenever possible, and if you must use pesticides, follow the instructions carefully and store them safely out of reach.
  6. Batteries: Button batteries, found in remote controls, toys, and even greeting cards, can cause serious internal injuries if swallowed. Keep all batteries stored securely and be vigilant about checking for loose batteries in toys.
  7. Personal Care Products: Items like perfume, nail polish remover, and hair dye can contain toxic ingredients. Store them safely away from children, preferably in a locked cabinet.
  8. Lead: Older homes may have lead-based paint, which can be hazardous if ingested or if dust containing lead is inhaled. If you suspect your home has lead paint, consult a professional for testing and remediation.
  9. Carbon Monoxide: Often called the “silent killer,” carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced by fuel-burning appliances. Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
  10. Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages should be stored securely out of reach of children at all times. Even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous for young children if ingested.

Conclusion: As moms, we can never be too cautious when it comes to keeping our children safe from household poisons. By being aware of these common hazards and taking steps to prevent exposure, we can create a safer environment for our families to thrive in. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and together, we can protect our little ones from harm.
